Wrapping Up the Year
Well as the new year dawns I wanted to take a little time to reflect on the changes and accomplishments in my life in 2019. As I said in my last post, my divorce became final last month, but that just puts a period at the end of that chapter in my life. All in all its been a pretty good year. This time last year I was an emotional mess. Deep in mourning for my very dead marriage and the betrayal I felt. So twelve months later I can honestly say I feel much better. I feel I'm on a new path to create a life I love. As part of that journey I wanted to take look back at the most important things that happened for me in these twelve months.
I cut my hair really short and kept it that way. I know that doesn't sound important but to me it is, it marks a break from the past in a really tangible way.
I started taking really good care of myself, following healthy habits like brushing and flossing my teeth twice a day. I wasn't always great at that one.
I follow a fairly indulgent skin care ritual both morning and evening. I strive to go to bed by 11 pm getting up at 5 am. I still struggle with that one. I'm a night owl by nature but I'd like to consistently be at work by 8 am and I don't always make that happen. Its that hour + commute each way. But I've started listening to audio books along the way.
I started working on my house; changing things I had hated for years.
My daughter with all the energy of youth - cleaned up the den in the basement and hung new curtains in my bedroom. The kids helped me replace rotten boards on my decks and walkways this past summer.
In the fall, I started hiring tradesmen to do things like fix he hole on the side of my house, and hang new light fixtures on the first floor. Most recently I gained some new closet storage now that all of my ex's shit is out of my bedroom closet. My daughter and I hung shelves. Now all my purses are on display. That way its much easier to see what I have, so I shouldn't need to buy any more.
On the professional front, I developed and taught a professional development course at my professional conference in May. I got a lot of help from people I didn't really even know, and it was a great experience. I plan on doing it again in 2020.
I traveled to Mexico and South America for work. That wasn't really new but it was different since my son was on his own and I got to spend a lot of nights worrying that he would be OK. He's seventeen now and in a lot of ways it was easier to be away when he he was three. I also started studying Spanish and preparing for another professional certification but those are really challenges for 2020. The most exciting thing I did in my work life was host a party at my home for my work team. That was awesome. I used to love having people over but in the last ten years or so that had stopped and I forgot how much I missed it. Everyone had a good time and someone suggested I do we do it annually.
On the more personal side, I got much more serious about yoga and meditation and continued to watch my diet. I have lost over twenty pounds since January. But the most important thing that happened for me personally this year is that I started to realize that life goes on and I really can change everything so long as I keep trying to make my dreams a reality. I can't wait to see what I can do in the year to come.
